The Power Supply
Sshtomp!
Stop Press : Before you carry on see Maplins item VV33, you might want to skip a few pages?
If you play guitar in a rock band, you probably fall into one of four catagories :
- You're dad bought you a Line-6 Pod Pro, you play 'hair rock'/thrash/american punk, and you take yourself far too seriously. (No you won't be famous, you'll argue, shag each others girlfriends, fall out, split, sell your equipment and get a job in sales or middle management.)
- You bought your own Line-6 Pod Pro, you get together with a bunch of 30 somethings now and then and knock out 80's rock tunes, you don't take anything seriously. (Can you still remember how to play intro to 'hot for teacher?')
- You own a second hand Boss HM2, with the wires hanging off the battery connector, you play anything short, so that your distortion doesn't cut off mid song. (I sympathise, I really do, I've been there.)
- You own a shiteload of pedals collected over the years, have a battery bill equal to the GDP of Peru. It takes you 20 minutes to set it all up and you spend practice sessions chasing them around the room as they slide about. (This page is for you)
It won't take anyone in catagory 4 long before they realise they need a stomp board.
But are you really going to pay the going price for jumped up box?
And if you do, will it buzz, crackle, and generally make offensive noises in the middle of your quite solo?
"Buzz?!" you say, "why would it buzz?"... Well.. I'll tell you :
The problem with pedals, and power supplies is called the 'earth loop' (see image below).
Even some commercial multi-pedal supplies and stomp boards are reported to buzz like a b*stard. You pays yer money, you takes yer chances I'm afraid.
The only way to make sure that your board he no buzz, is to make the darn thang yourself!
The way to stop earth loop hum is to isolate each pedal from the mains earth by using a separate AC to DC transforming power supply for each pedal.
This brings several problems :
- Space. Each plug adapter type supply takes up a mains socket! And they are a valuable resource.
- Health and Safety. All those wires running from the mains to the pedals.. They get everywhere, and they're very trippy uppy.
- Cost. The power supplies are 9.6VDC, some pedals are very fussy about that. So you can't just buy any old shonky pedal. Each one then is going to extract a wedge from your sky rocket.
Now.. Being an engineer my next thought was : "well, I'll make my own pedal board, with it's own set of individual isolated power supplies, how hard can it be?".
And the answer to that is, not very hard at all!
And because I'm at heart, a nice guy, I'll blog the project, so you people in catagory 4, can reap the benefits of my labour..
So without further ado, here's the first page :
